Arushya school of Dance was started by Nandini Muthyamvenkata in 2003 in Chennai with a mission to share her knowledge and experience with young minds and to make it accessible to children and adults alike with an interest to learn.

Arushya offers a structured learning program based on the Kalakshetra style of instruction while simultaneously tailoring it to suit student’s individual needs.

At Arushya, we believe that learning and practicing any art form is an enriching journey to self discovery and experiencing creative awareness.

The Classes are structured to develop appreciation of music for dance, understand basic Indian mythological themes, gain insight into theoretical texts for dance and to improve stability and stamina through exercises and techniques.

Nandini MuthyamVenkata

Artistic Director

Nandini Muthyamvenkata started training in Bharatanatyam from Smt. Visalakshi Amma in Hyderabad. A move to Chennai put her under the guidance of Kum. Saroja Vanchi and then under Smt. Nagamani Srinivasa Rao. Later on, she furthered her training under Smt. Rao's brother, the legend, Shri Adyar K Lakshman, Sri Balagopal of Kalakshetra, Chennai and Smt Kalanidhi Narayanan in Abhinaya form of dance( expressive dance)

Nandini made her formal stage debut with her Arangetram in January 1999 and has not looked back since. A graded artiste of the Chennai Doordarsham Kendra, she has worked closely with some of the leading and senior dancers like Shri C V Chandrasekhar, Smt Vyjayanthimala Bali, Smt Ambika Buch, Smt Krishnaveni Lakshman, Smt Roja Kannan, the Balagurunathans, in dance ballets and productions. She was fortunate to train in an informal environment with actors of the Koothu-Pattarai team and Magic Lantern theatre group such as Jaykumar and Pasupathy (now a prominent film actor) in her college years. This exposure helped her develop a deep appreciation of the theatre and performing arts, sensibilities that she brings to her performances, adding a flair to her presentation. Nandini also served on the committee of ABHAI (Association of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India) and taught Bharatnatyam from her private school ‘Arushya’ in Chennai before relocating to California in 2006. Even though she holds degrees in Microbiology and Psychology, Nandini realized at a young age that dance was her calling.

Nandini has earned accolades and praise through her various performances all over India and more recently, in the US (San Francisco Bay Area). Performing at the December Music and Dance festival season every year in Chennai, which is considered an important platform for all artistes over the world, Nandini garnered appreciation in the press and public. Nandini currently lives and teaches Bharathanatyam from her school , ARUSHYA in Austin, Texas.
